Devon Junior Girls - Team Results

Devon Girls v DCLVGA
Axe Cliff Golf Club - 25th March 2018

The first match of the 2018 season for the Devon Girls was played on 25th March at Axe Cliff Golf Club against the Devon County Lady Veterans' Golf Association (DCLVGA). It was great to play golf  in lovely sunshine and reasonable temperatures on the first really pleasant day this year.

With 8 players competing on each side (one honorary junior for the day in Jill Wellington), the format was 4-ball betterball, with 4 pairs on each team. The Devon Girls recorded a very creditable win of 3 games to 1.  As this was new Juniors' Organiser Jo Donmall's first match, the girls did her proud.

All the games were played in very good spirit with lots of jokes and laughs amongst the players. Playing for the DCLVGA were Sue Ritchie, Ann Norman, Wendy Roberts, Barbara Cummings (Captain), Sandra Walker, Marcia Jones, Angie Newman & Kay Foster.

Devon Juniors were captained by Charlotte Husband (Exeter) and team members were Flossie Voaden (Woodbury Park), Lauren McGinnis (Churston), Carys Morris (Portmore), Sophie Brown (Fingle Glen), Sophie Page (Exeter) and Jade Montier (Dainton Park). Jill Wellington was an honorary junior for the day to make up the team to 8.

DCLVGA & Devon Girls

Devon Girls

Girls' SW Inter-Counties Tournament
Exeter Golf & Country Club - 23-25th July 2017

The squad:
Lexi Dart - Churston, Charlotte Husband - Exeter Golf & Country Club, Meg Rossouw - Yelverton, Molly Pavey - Stover, Josie Phillips - Exminster, Karrie Spencer - Churston, Evie Stone - East Devon, Ellie Tampkins - Stover.

Sunday, 23rd July - Devon v Gloucestershire - Match halved
All the teams assembled ready for the 2017 Girls' Inter Counties Tournament at Exeter Golf & Country Club. Devon were on the tee against last year's winner's Gloucestershire. The team was led off by Evie Stone (East Devon) who was playing Ebonie Lewis who had finished 8th in the recent English Ladies' Amateur Championship. This was a fine game with players trading birdies. Evie eventually lost on the 18th, at which point Ebonie was 4 under gross.

Molly Pavey (Stover) put the first point on the board for Devon winning on the 15th. The next 2 games finished on the 17th with mixed results, a loss for Lexi Dart (Churston) and a win for Meg Rossouw (Yelverton). The match was now 2 games each. Charlotte Husband (Exeter) left the 17th green all square in her game and, with  a growing number of spectators, halved the 18th and the game.

All eyes turned to the last game on which the result of the match would hang. Karrie Spencer (Churston), in her first Junior Inter-Counties, stood on the 18th tee all square. For even the most experienced golfer the 18th at Exeter with its new water feature is a daunting finishing hole, and then you add spectators and a photographer.  Both girls found water but recovered well to halve the hole, halve their game and halve the match. It was tense stuff and the girls were credit to themselves and to Devon - well done.

MAGIC MONDAY
Monday Morning, 24th July - Devon v Somerset - 4-2 to Devon

A glorious but breezy morning greeted the girls on the first tee this morning. The girls were in good humour after their strong showing against Gloucestershire yesterday. Josie Phillips (Exminster) and Ellie Tampkins (Stover) were both playing in their first Inter-Counties and 1st tee nerves were quickly forgotten. Ellie got the better of her opponent on 15th and Josie fought all the way until finally losing on 17.

Captain Molly Pavey, Meg Rossouw and yesterday's debutant Karrie Spencer all brought home wins and, although Lexi Dart lost, Devon were victorious 4-2.

Monday Afternoon - Devon v Wiltshire 5-1 to Devon
Devon Girls were ready for the afternoon challenge. If anything the wind was stronger and was going to prove problematic all afternoon. Evie was back to lead the team off having been rested in the morning. She took an early 3 hole lead but was pegged back to all square after the 10th. Evie may have been slightly unsettled by a wayward drive on 9 which almost hit 2 spectators who turned out to be her parents! By the time Evie had reached the 16th tee still all square, Meg had recorded Devon's first win with a 6-5 victory. Evie then proceeded to win the 16th & 17th and a second Devon win. Further back Karrie had an inspired opponent who had only dropped 2 shots by the turn, although playing off a handicap of 11. However hard Karrie tried, she could not come back from that. So now it was 2-1 to Devon and the other 3 matches were all close. After the turn Ellie started to hit the ball straighter and victory subsequently followed, her second win of the day for 3-1 to Devon. The last 2 matches went down 18 and it was tense. Josie Philips, playing her second match of the day, recorded her first victory for Devon at Inter-Counties by halving the 18th and winning her match 1 up. Charlotte won her match on the 18th and it was Devon's day 5-1.

After Day 2, Devon top the table with Gloucestershire.

Truly jumping for joy after Magic Monday

Tuesday Morning, 25th July - Devon v Cornwall - 4-2 to Cornwall
After Magic Monday the team were all fired up for the final day. Cornwall were first up this morning. There was plenty of banter on the practice putting green beforehand. Unfortunately the team were unable to maintain their 100% record and went down 4-2. Evie won a keenly contested match 3-2 and Charlotte came back from 4 down on 10 to win 2-1. Congratulations to Molly who had a Hole in One on 12, but unfortunately she lost her match on 16. Lexi, Josie and Ellie battled away but in the end were unable to overcome their Cornwall opponents.

Molly Pavey (Stover) after her Hole in One

Tuesday Afternoon, 25th July - Devon v Dorset  - 3½ to 2½ to Dorset
This was a most excellent match with 4 of the games finishing on Exeter's altered 18th - spectators and water quite a challenge. Evie was all square on the 18th tee but lost the hole and her game to a well constructed birdie. It was a match of the highest order.

Lexi was next down the 18th but had the advantage of being 1 up on the tee. Having found the bunker with her drive was this going to be a problem? No. The rest of the hole was played very well for a half and the match 1up.

Molly had rushed to a 4 hole advantage by the 6th tee but her momentum was stopped by her opponent's nose bleed. The following 2 matches were let through as the blood flow was stemmed. By the 18th Molly was 1 up and her second shot had come to rest under the trees on the right-hand side of the fairway and her opponent in the middle of the fairway. A punched 5 iron later and Molly was on the green and 2 putts secured the half and the second win for Devon.

Meg and Karrie found their opponents a little too good. Ellie was 1 up but her opponent was far more experienced. Ellie's chip just went over the back of the green leaving her a devilish down hill chip back. The Dorset player sensibly played to the centre of the green and unfortunately Ellie was unable to get up and down - match halved. Result Dorset 3½ - Devon 2½.

The Devon Girls played some wonderful golf this SW Inter-Counties and they should be proud of their individual and team display. Many thanks to Exeter Golf and Country Club for hosting the event and to all the staff at Exeter - the course was in fabulous condition.  Thank you also to all the "aunties" and spotters.  Finally a huge thank you to the the Devon Junior Organiser Gill Lang, Annie Norman and Ben Martin, Exeter's Golf  Manager, for all their hard work in organising this wonderful event.

DEVON GIRLS v DORSET GIRLS
Exeter Golf & Country Club - 2nd June 2017

Back Row (L-R): Ellie Tampkins, Sophie Page, Lexi Dart, Charlotte Husband
Front Row (L-R): Rosie Lacey, Sophie Brown, Lara Dark, Lauren McGinnis

Devon Junior Girls played Dorset on Friday 2nd June at Exeter G&CC. 8 pairs played singles matchplay. Dorset fielded a strong team, all with handicaps of 11 and under.

The forecast was looking promising for the afternoon and the matches started with some excellent drives and, despite their nerves, the young players in the team made a good start with Lara Darke (Exminster) going 3 up in the first 5 holes. Devon Girls were able to take advantage of their shots and there were strong performances from Lauren McGinnis (Churston), Ellie Tampkins (Stover) and Lexi Dart of Churston (Captain) who all won their matches quite convincingly.

Unfortunately the rain had started by the 9th hole but this didn’t seem to deter the girls. Sophie Page (East Devon) was 2 down going onto the 16th and won the next 2 holes. The match was halved on the 18th green. Charlotte Husband (Exeter), Sophie Brown (Fingle Glen) and Rosie Lacey (Exminster) all fought hard and played some excellent shots, but were beaten by the in form Dorset players. The final result was 4 ½ to Devon and 3 ½ to Dorset. A great win for the Devon girls. Congratulations to all of you.

Many thanks to Exeter G&CC - it was a great opportunity for everyone to have the experience of playing there before the SW Girls’ Inter Counties from Sunday 23rd July to Tuesday 25th July.

The Tyler Trophy 2017
Yelverton Golf Club

The annual Tyler Trophy match between the DCLGA 2nd Team and the Junior Girls was played at Yelverton on Sunday, 21st May 2017. The match was played in glorious sunshine with a testing wind. Both sides fielded a team of 7 players and Devon Junior Girls went on to win 4½ to 2½.

The Tyler Trophy was presented to the winning team by Sally Tyler and her mother who were present to support both teams as they played.

Cornwall Girls v Devon Girls - 11th April 2017

Pride was at stake for our Girls in Blue as they played their return match against Cornwall Girls at Lanhdyrock Golf Club. Having lost 1½ to 2½ at Exeter G&CC the previous week, the 3-2 result was hard fought.

The girls were greeted with sunshine on arrival at Lanhydrock. Once again they were up against a strong Cornwall team, but this was a new course for our girls.

Devon had a strong start with Jess Leach (Bigbury) and Jade Montier going up 3 holes in the early holes with Ellie Tampkins (Stover) and Lucia Woodall (Churston) staying ahead and taking advantage of their shots. Both pairs went on to win their matches. The first group out of Meg Rossouw (Yelverton), who was Captain for the day, and Sophie Page (East Devon) had a closely fought game. They both held their nerve and finished 1 up. Charlotte Husband (Exeter) and Rosie Lacey (Exminster) also had a close match but unfortunately finished 1 down. Sophie Brown (Fingle Glen) and Flossy Voaden both played well, but couldn’t defeat their oponents.

The final score was 3 matches to Devon and 2 matches to Cornwall. A great win for Devon. Well done girls. Devon Girls look forward to playing at Lanhydrock again and would like to thank the club for hosting the match.

Devon Girls v Cornwall Girls - 5th April 2017

Devon Girls played their home match against Cornwall Girls at Exeter G & CC.  The sun was shining and the new course was in excellent condition. 4 girls played their first match for Devon Girls - Rosie Lacey & Lara Darke (Exminster); Sophie Page (East Devon) and Grace Jeffery (Exminster). Cornwall played a strong team and unfortunately Devon lost 1½ to 2½. Josie Phillips (Exminster) & Sophie Brown (Fingle Glen) won convincingly and Lexi Dart (Churston) & Jess Leach (Bigbury) had a closely fought match which resulted in a half.

The girls enjoyed playing the new Exeter course and they all played some excellent golf with accurate putting. Their next match is away to Cornwall at Lanhydrock GC on Tuesday, 11th April.

Devon Girls v Devon U16 Boys - 12th March 2017

Devon Girls played Devon U16 Boys in the annual match at Stover Golf Club. The girls took full advantage of the courtesy shots they received with convincing wins from Lexi Dart, Charlotte Husband, Karrie Spencer, Josie Phillips and Ellie Tampkins. Meg Rossouw and Jess Leach’s matches went to the 18th green and resulted in a half. Chloe Howard and Molly Pavey, despite playing to par, were unable to beat their strong opponents.

The highlight of the day was Karrie Spencer making a hole in one on the 13th hole! Devon Girls won the match with a score of 5 to 3 which means they have finally won the Roy Greenaway Trophy for the first time since it started in 2009. As usual the match was played in a great friendly spirit. Many thanks to Stover Golf Club for hosting the day and catering for us all.

Junior Girls v County Vets - 17th February 2017 at Stover

Jane MacDonald Smith (DCVLGA) presenting the cheque for £250
to Devon Junior Girls' Captain Molly Pavey

Thankfully the weather has been kind for us this half term and Devon Girls were able to play their annual match against DCLVGA at Stover on Friday. The course was in good condition and the main greens were in play. All matches were played in good spirit and the girls enjoyed playing with the Lady Vets. Two of the betterball matches were halved and Devon Girls won 2 matches and the Lady Vets were also triumphant in 2 of their matches. The final result was a draw so everybody was happy.

Many thanks to DCLGA Captain Angie Hickey for starting all matches and we would like to thank Stover for making us all so welcome. Also many thanks to Jane MacDonald-Smith and DCLVGA for their generous cheque for £250. 3 girls played their first match for Devon Girls - Jade Montier from Dainton Park, Flossy Voaden from Woodbury Park and Lucia Woodall from Churston. I also played my first match as a Devon Girl as one of the team was unwell and unable to play!!

The girls are all looking forward to their next coaching session on Sunday, 26th February at
Exeter University. Tiffany MacKenzie will be taking the session and 17 girls will be attending.

SW Inter-Counties 2016 - Tuesday 9th August 2016
Devon v Gloucestershire - Match Drawn 3-3

The final match of the 2016 Girls' Inter-Counties was going to decide the winners. Devon required a win and Gloucestershire would be winners with a drawn match or better. An unbeaten Molly Pavey for the 5th match in a row led off the Devon team. Molly was playing Ebonie Lewis and, on this occasion, was on the wrong end of the result losing on the 17th green. Emily Morey couldn't quite find the form of the morning and lost on the 16th. Evie Stone was in a tussle with Alex Giles which ended when Evie birdied the 18th to win 2 Up. Grace Jackson played a captain's role and held her nerve to halve the 18th and win her match 1 Up. Meg Rossouw always had the upper hand in her match against Hannah Brown-Pearce and finally closed it out on the 17th. Now 3-2 in Devon's favour it all rested on the last match. Charlotte Husband, the match winner of yesterday, was unable to repeat the feat today and the match was drawn and Gloucestershire are the Girls' Inter-Counties Champions with Devon having missed out by half a point. The feeling of disappointment was soon replaced by a sense of achievement. This is Devon's best result for a number of years and the girls are determined to go one better next year when Inter-Counties is being hosted in Devon by Exeter Golf & Country Club. The girls should be very proud of themselves for the good golf they played and the manner in which they played it.

Tuesday 9th August 2016
Devon v Dorset    Devon Won 5-1

A beautiful Tuesday morning greeted the players at Cumberwell Park with only 1 point seperating 1st and 6th. The game plan was to go out hard in the morning and see what the state of play was at lunch. The team followed the script to the letter and very quickly were up in most matches. This trend continued and the team ran out winners 5 -1. The other results of the morning meant the afternoon match against Gloucestershire was a winner takes all situation, actually a drawn match would be enough for Gloucestershire as they went into the afternoon with a half point lead.

Monday 8th August 2016
Cornwall v Devon    Devon Won 4-2

Cornwall were the opposition this afternoon and were out for revenge having lost their match to Devon earlier in the year. All the matches were keenly contested and Molly led the way again with another win. Evie and Grace secured 2 more points. So now it was 3-2 to Devon after Emily and Lexi lost tight matches in which they were both giving shots. So was it to be a half or a win for Devon? It was all down to the last match and Charlotte Husband playing in her first Inter-Counties stood on the 18th tee all square. Never before had she played with such an audience or  under such pressure yet Charlotte held her nerve and won the hole and the match for Devon 4-2.

Just 1 point seperates all 6 teams going into the final day - all to play for. Dorset first up in the morning with Gloucestershire the final match tomorrow afternoon.

After yesterday's halved match with Wiltshire in which for the second time this year Evie Stone lost a hole to a hole in one Devon were up against Somerset this morning.  Molly Pavey and Lexi Dart secured two points and Jess Francis half a point but unfortunately Emily Morey, Meg Rossouw and Grace Jackson, all giving a number of shots,  just came up short and Somerset won by one point 3.5 to 2.5.

The rearranged match against Cornwall Girls took place on a glorious day at Launceston. The match was won 6-2. There were some memorable moments with debutant Jess Leach winning her match 6 & 2 and Josie Phillips scoring a 2 on the par 5 16th.

Devon Team: Emily Morey (East Devon), Jess Francis (Churston), Charlotte Husband (Tiverton), Ellie Tampkins (Stover), Josie Phillips (Exminster), Hannah Carthew (Tiverton), Jess Leach (Bigbury) and Sophie Brown (Fingle Glen).

The Tyler Trophy

Unfortunately the weather intervened at the Tyler Trophy match beween the County 2nd Team and Devon Girls on Saturday 21st May.  Only four holes were played before the fog rolled back in to stay. The weather didn't dampen spirits though!

Devon Girls V DCLVGA

On the Monday of half term Devon Girls were greeted at Saunton GC with bright blue sky and sunshine and ready to play DCLVGA on the East Course. The views were stunning and full greens were in play. Alison Hilton, County Captain 2016, arrived to start the 6 Betterball matches. There was much banter and laughter on the 1st tee which helped to relax the two Devon girls, Josie Philips from Exminster and Bea Stone from East Devon, both playing in their first team match.

Chloe Howard, playing off scratch, played an impressive first drive for Devon Girls and the Lady Vets realised they were facing some touch opposition! This didn’t seem to deter Annie Norman and Rosemary Ferguson as they were able to halve their match with Chloe and Hannah Carthew.  Val Cook, DCLVGA Captain, playing with Kay Foster followed in the second match against Caitlin Evans-Brand and Jess Francis, who both played some excellent shots to win 4 & 2. The third match between Grace Jackson and Josie Philips and Gina Oliver with Barbara Lake was halved. Molly Pavey and Meg Rossouw managed a clear win of 4 & 3 against Jackie Carr and Jane McDonald-Smith. Unfortunately, the last 2 matches had to walk in as it became very cold once the sun disappeared but the girls were winning in both matches. The final score was 5 -1 to Devon Girls

Everyone enjoyed an excellent meal afterwards in the clubhouse and many positive comments were made about the girls’ golfing ability and their delightful company. Val Cook made a presentation of £250 to Devon Girls on behalf of DCLVGA. Grace Jackson, the Girls’ Captain, showed her gratitude for their generosity on behalf of the girls. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and many thanks to Saunton GC for making us all so welcome.
