County Ladies’ Championship at Royal North Devon Golf Club on 12-13th May 2018

We were warmly welcomed by RND’s Ladies’ Captain, Liz McKay, at 8 o’clock on Saturday morning. The weather was bright and sunny and it wasn’t long before the competitors started arriving wrapped up warmly against the chilly light breeze. Were we really at RND? …..

We had a field of 28 ladies from various clubs throughout the county playing in twos and with handicaps ranging from +3 to 24. The first pairing of Chloe Howard (Boringdon Park) and Keeley Clarke(Torquay), the defending Champion, were sent on their way at 9 o’clock by our Ladies’ County Captain, Chris
Longden. The course was in wonderful condition and the first competitors started to reappear back in the club house just over three hours later, ready to refuel before starting their second round at 1.30pm. By 6.30pm all had completed their second round and everyone was eager to find out who had qualified
for the knock-out stages to be held the following day, before leaving the clubhouse and getting some well-earned R and R (and celebrating birthdays!) whilst reminiscing on what could have been!

The eight players who had made it through to the next day were Caitlin Evans-Brand, Abigail Turner, Amanda Burchell, Evie Stone, Keeley Clarke, Charlotte Dommett, Lauren Pearce and Abigail Moyes. It was unfortunate that Chloe Howard was unable to play on the Sunday because of a family commitment. Sunday dawned all too soon. Another bright and sunny day saw the first semi-final of Caitlin and Evie teeing off at 9 o’clock followed by Abigail Turner and Amanda 10 minutes later. Then it was the turn of the Lloyd Williams Salver competitors, Keeley playing Abigail Moyes and Charlotte against Lauren Pearce. Caitlin won the first match with a birdie on the 18th and the 3rd and 4th matches were won 3 & 1 and 3 & 2 respectively. However, we all had to wait quite some time for Abigail to beat Amanda on the 22nd hole! A quick turn around and the final matches were off followed by a respectable army of supporters. It was nail-biting with both matches swinging back and forth before the eventual winners were victorious.

Prize giving took place just before 6pm and was opened with a very warm welcome by the RND Ladies’ Captain, Liz McKay. DevonGolf President Carolyn Maynard presented hard fought for prizes to grinning recipients, who were:

Handicap & Phillis Collett Bowl Winner:  Amanda BURCHELL (5) Bigbury GC 75+68 = 143 ocb

Captain's Prize: (6 hidden holes x2 rounds):  Keeley CLARKE Torquay

Two’s: There were 13 Twos over the 36 holes on Saturday.
