EXPRESS & ECHO 2017

The ladies were competing for the Express & Echo Finals Shield for which they had qualified through their respective clubs. This shield had been presented by Mr Jeff Harvey-Barnes, Sports Editor of the Express & Echo Newspaper in 1985.

The day started in warm sunshine and all was set for an enjoyable day’s golf at Torquay. It wasn’t long before we realised we had a problem. All the telephones started ringing to inform us that because of a jack-knifed lorry and an accident, all traffic was being diverted from Totnes to Torquay through the narrow back roads. This was causing a major delay in our starting line-up. Thankfully, the vast majority of competitors were willing to get onto the first tee as soon as possible, no-one minding when their tee time should have been. Luckily our Devon Ladies' Captain, Angie, was managing the disorder remarkably calmly, ticking off names rather than times on her start sheet. Happily toward the end, all was returning to normal and the 65th pairing started their foursomes stableford round just 10 minutes late.

The early golfers were soon reappearing in the club house after just 3½ hours. They were thankful to have enjoyed a warm sunny round, unlike the finals few pairings who were caught in an amazing rain/hail storm lasting for about 8 minutes, after which the sun came out again.

Prize-giving took place about 4.45pm when the prize-winners started reappearing in the clubhouse. Mrs Val Atkinson, the Lady Captain of Torquay GC welcomed the DCLGA and all the ladies. It was then over to Angie to present the prizes.
