Okehampton Finish Season On A High

County Bowmaker 7th October at Okehampton

Michelle Widdows, Janice Thwaites & Abby Turner with County Captain Alison Hilton

The weather was forecast to be cloudy but dry until later in the morning but around 9 the mizzle started. It was a day not without incident County Captain Alison was stuck in the traffic and it took her 65 minutes to travel 20 miles so she missed the first group leaving the tee. My helper for the day did not appear so I was well and truly “Billy no mates” to start with but as always Okehampton Captain Janice and all the Okehampton ladies, Bev and all the staff made me very welcome and were available to help.

After Alison arrived she was seen donning waterproofs as the rain started to fall heavily, the first competition of the year with rain though. Janice rushed out with an umbrella for her and we provided warming drinks as it was getting quite chilly out there. Alison even managed to get stung by a wasp another first whilst engaged in starting duties. Janice had arranged for an army of spotters which helped enormously and even had a half way house for the players, staffed by Mr “Janice” Thwaites.

Chris and the catering staff gave the ladies a great selection of meals to enjoy when they had finished playing and he was doing a roaring trade in bacon rolls before the ladies left the club house. With Chris’s help we were able to have the live leader board facility, the “Smart” TV and the “Intelligent” golf system working well together.

Early in the day the first team from Okehampton posted a score of 69 which remained in the lead all day. The light levels started to drop during the afternoon and it was definitely gloomy outside. However all the ladies remained cheerful despite the weather!

Ashley and Johnny in the Pro Shop did a roaring trade judging by the number of carrier bags passing me on the desk, and yes I succumbed …My thanks to John Hirst from Devon Golf who popped in during the day for a chat and ended up helping me process the cards.

The team of Abi Turner, Janice Thwaites and Michelle Widdows from Okehampton went out at 1130. Part way through the afternoon word reached the Club House that Michelle had achieved a hole in one on the 7th. The Okehampton ladies were waiting in the Clubhouse for their return knowing that there would be another opportunity to celebrate with a glass of something.

When Abi, Janice and Michelle returned to the Club House it was with a tremendous score of 80. This was the winning score for the day. Michelle immediately set to work organising the requisite bottles of wine to celebrate her hole in one.

This was my final competition of my three year stint. It has been in the main a very enjoyable three years. I have met many lovely ladies from all over the County, some of whom have become friends and for all the help I have received from the Clubs who have hosted our events I thank you all. I am very grateful to Okehampton for the beautiful flowers they presented to me and for their generosity today. I will look forward to 2017 when perhaps I might see you all on the golf course somewhere.

There were 11 two’s and a hole in one.
