Western Morning News Rose Bowl
When I arrived at Stover at 0700 it was cold but at least it was dry and the sun was appearing. At 0800 Vice-Captain Angie was on the tee ready for the first of the 152 players to tee off, led by Keeley Clarke and Charlotte Dommett from Torquay and Lexi Dart and Jess Francis from Churston. The course is in excellent condition and the new “iron” for the greens made the putting very challenging. Certainly during my brief sprint up the first fairway to reunite one of the ladies with her card the course looked glorious in the sunshine.
Keeley and Charlotte arrived back in just over three hours with 35 points and Lexi and Jess had a 2 on the 13th. A short time afterwards Sue Elson and Chris Cornish from Dainton Park came in with 36 points. This remained the leading score throughout the day. Meanwhile ably assisted by Wendy I was still registering the 152 players from 14 different clubs. The players returning to the club house hot and thirsty as it reached 20 + degrees and they were well catered for by Paul and his team behind the bar.
Once the nominated pairs for the chosen ones were put up, there were the usual comments mostly involving hindsight, about those selected. The Dartmouth results were posted quite early and they had an aggregate of 66, which remained the best score throughout the day. A steady stream of Dartmouth ladies travelled back and forth to the score board each time a new score was posted.
Towards the end Torquay and Stover were the only teams that could move ahead of Dartmouth. Around 1600 the Torquay pairing of Sally Spokes and Di Swift came in with 32 points and this was the exact number they needed to pip Dartmouth to the prize by one point and become the winners of the Western Morning News Rose Bowl for 2016.
Around 1715 the prize giving took place and County President Ann Legg presented the prizes. The two scored by Lexi and Jess on the 13th remained the only two of the day and first of all Ann presented Jess with a mountain of golf balls, over ten dozen, to take back to Churston.
