COUNTY BOWMAKER 2017

The County Bowmaker was held at Saunton Golf Club on Wednesday, 18th October, 2017. 

This was the last county competition of the year and we had 117 ladies making up 39 teams from 23 clubs playing the West Course off 90% handicap. The weather forecast wasn’t very promising and there were a few showers through the morning. Anthea, the Ladies' Captain from Saunton GC and appropriately dressed in waterproofs, had volunteered to be Starter from the first team off at 8.30, until our County Captain, Angie arrived and took over just after 10, as promised. This allowed Anthea to come in and get warm. The first few teams, from the more local clubs, were reappearing in the clubhouse well before the final team teed off at 1.15, tucking into a warming tasty meal whilst reminiscing the ‘what ifs’.

All the staff and members at Saunton Golf Club made us extremely welcome and were on hand to answer queries and help make the long day run smoothly.

We didn’t have to wait very long to witness the first highlight of day, a ‘Hole in One’ by Nicky Sandom from Saunton, which certainly smartened up their card! It wasn’t until about half way through when a score of 80 points was posted by the Tavistock (1) team of Bev Ruth, Belinda McSherry and Nicky Gawman. They were tucking into three slices of the amazing cakes on offer when the penultimate threesome of Vicky Holloway, Val Banks and Charlotte Dommett came in with 79 points - and we all knew that the 80 points was the winning score!

Prize giving was at 6pm and opened by a very warm welcome to us all from Anthea. For Angie it was her last prize giving in her year-long tenure. She warmly thanked the club, admin, catering and bar staff, the Pro shop, greenkeepers, as well as admiring the incredible floral displays on the table and around the club house.

There were 10 prizes, 6 Two’s and a Hole-in-One.

The whole day was most enjoyable and my grateful thanks to all the Saunton members and staff who made it such a success.
