After the delays and re-scheduling
caused by fog at Bigbury last year the County Officials could not be
blamed for thinking that nothing could be worse...mother nature had
other thoughts! Friday morning started with heavy rain and
blustery winds when the first players ventured onto the course.
What a disappointment for the Holsworthy members who, together with
the green staff, had worked tirelessly to make sure that the course
was at its best. Sadly, as the weather worsened during the day
the decision had to be taken early afternoon to abandon play and
reduce the qualifying round from 36 to 18 holes. Saturday
proved to be mainly uneventful in terms of the weather, and the
matches were able to proceed without further disruption. The
final of the Plate ended with a convincing win for Sally Charnock (Saunton)
against Liz Toy (Stover). "Sally played so steadily and gave
nothing away" said Liz, who went on to add "however, I am
delighted to have got to the final". Sally was certainly very
determined and focussed throughout the match...as a county selector
and member of the 1st team, she is undoubtedly a great role-model
for the younger players. The Championship final was an equally
exciting event...Charlotte Dommett (Torquay) was defending the
title, having won at Bigbury last year. Incidentally,
Charlotte won the Championship, for the first time, at Bigbury 10
years earlier! Her opponent, Jo Hicks-Beach (Stover), was
County Champion in 2007 having won at East Devon. Unable to
play last year because she was in New Zealand, Jo was obviously out
to regain the title. On the day, as it happened, Charlotte was
indomitable! |
